McCain: I'm no phony warmonger like Bush

Watch this new tv ad for John McCain:

What is he trying to tell us?

Chris Bowers thinks the "McCain campaign is clearly trying to push the age card," emphasizing his age in order to gain advantage with the huge senior voting bloc in states like Florida and Pennsylvania. Bowers and Marc Ambinder call attention to the visuals in the ad, especially the closing profile photograph, which clearly shows the lines in McCain's face.

Although McCain may be hoping for a "senior backlash" against Obama, I don't think that's what he's getting at in this ad. Close your eyes and listen to what he is saying, especially the first lines in the ad:

Only a fool or a fraud talks tough or romantically about war. When I was five years old, my father left for war. My grandfather came home from war and died the next day. I was shot down over Vietnam and spent five years as a POW. Some of the friends I served with never came home.

I hate war, and I know how terrible its costs are. I'm running for president to keep the country I love safe. I'm John McCain, and I approved this message.

Gee, who do you think he's referring to when he says only a fool or a fraud talks tough about war?

The subtext of this ad is clear: McCain is telling us that he understands what war means (unlike Bush), that he has lost family members and close friends in war (unlike Bush), and he is not going to swagger around as president, excited by the prospect of starting more wars.

It sounds as if McCain's campaign is worried about the public taking him at his word when he said staying in Iraq for 50 to 100 years would be fine by him.

We need to keep reminding Americans that McCain wants permanent U.S. bases in Iraq and has no problem with our troops staying there forever. It also wouldn't hurt to show clips of his comment from last year: "I'm sorry to tell you, there's gonna be other wars."

This You Tube parody from a few months back made the point effectively. Pass it around:

The tag line at the end is classic: McCain 08--Like Hope, but Different.

I think Mccain's ad was decent.

It was basically a repudiation of Bush and a biography to kinda highlight his families history with the military which is always a plus for me.

Sadly it's deceptive (2.00 / 2)

He was for invading Iraq before we had an excuse.  He knows the horrors of war... and he's all to eager to send our troops into harm's way.

This is an exploitable weakness.

Yes, well. (2.00 / 1)

A real warmonger is much better than a phony warmonger, yes?  No?

Aren't seniors (according to the polling we have) to most likely group to express reservations about McCain's age? Presumably, because they are intimately familiar with the physical and mental changes that sometimes afflict the elderly?

when Dole was running against Clinton (none / 0)

I remember reading somewhere that senior citizens were the most likely to express concern about his age affecting his ability to do the job.

Re: McCain: I'm no phony warmonger like Bush (none / 0)

My dad is an octogenarian and has as much respect for military folks as the next person. What's interesting is that some years ago he read McCain's autobiography, and that book has totally colored his opinion of McCain.  Based on McCain's own description of his attitude and actions as a youth and young soldier, my dad is convinced  McCain is a wreckless ass.

Now, I tend to think it's a mistake for Dad to form conclusions about a person based solely on a portrait of how they acted when they were much younger. On the other hand, McCain himself constantly, proudly invokes that past.

So maybe Dad is making a mistake, or maybe he isn't, in how he formed his opinion of McCain. Either way, I think he's formed an accurate opinion!

So perhaps Democrats should encourage seniors to read McCain's book? :-)

Re: McCain: I'm no phony warmonger like Bush (none / 0)

I was thinking of getting one of Obama's books for my Republican father who is against the war, but is voting for McCain because "he's a veteran" (so's my dad).
I know he sort of likes Obama, but not sure how to convince him to vote for him.
Anyone have any suggestions on which one of Obama's books to give my Dad for Father's Day next week?

McCain can only play this military card for so long.  It's his whole campaign and he's got nothing else to go on.  One minute he's Chimpy's best friend and the next minute he couldn't be any farther from the guy.  People aren't stupid and they are noticing this.

This administration is not sinking. This administration is soaring! If anything, they are rearranging the deck chairs on the Hindenburg!
